The Man of Flowers inhabited the constant ephemerality of awkward encounters; he always returns just as I forget the weight of that debt lying buried in the past. The memory of a pathological yes that was lost in vows never consummated.
He tried to force the key to profane secrets that broke every law. Perhaps the spiritual bond had not been severed as cleanly as we believed; that fragile emotional tenancy remained a reminder of a series of decisions made at random while caught in someone else’s dreamlike state.
And still intoxicated, in a crowded solitude, drowned beneath the repressed melancholy of withered plans, there remained a contract of commitments abandoned inside a drawer. A love left unfinished, brought down by January’s icy wind.
Our roots intertwined through silences, through whispers, through gazes held with tenderness, through the longing to dwell within the folds of your beard.
The immaculate, warm veil that separated us in that desert-yellow room invited me to reflect upon your passage into a life without me. More than nine winters have passed since that man lost the golden key; ever since, he has sought refuge in borrowed shadows. He allowed the weeds to overtake his garden forever, something one would never have permitted, though he did not know it, and in the end, he became rooted in a garden of flowers I had never imagined as his own.
The clamor warned me that, within that reality, there were neither messages nor light meant for me. I could no longer distinguish the words; everything endures as a cosmic noise that diverts my steps.
Perhaps what haunts us is not having lost one another; what haunts us is never having found each other while we were still waiting. Time was the one that wove the veil, along with the impossibility of entering the life that learned to exist without us.
